Pressure testing is the definitive diagnostic method for determining which underground pool plumbing circuits are leaking. The process begins by plugging all pool openings — returns, skimmer lines, main drain — with inflatable or mechanical test plugs at the pool wall. Each circuit is then pressurized individually at the equipment pad and monitored with a calibrated gauge over a specific time interval. A circuit that holds pressure is cleared; one that drops is flagged for further acoustic investigation to pinpoint the leak location above grade.

Pressure testing is especially valuable before any pool replastering, renovation, or deck work begins.
